Guess the Book Title!

What book am I quoting from?

#1
He walked right around the cave, touching as much as the rough rock as he could, occasionally pausing, running his fingers backwards and forwards over a particular spot, until he finally stopped, his hand pressed flat against the wall.
'Here,' he said. 'We go on through here. The entrance is concealed.'
...
He stepped back from the cave wall and pointed his wand at the rock. For a moment, an arched outline appeared there, blazing white as though there was a powerful light behind the crack.

still wondering? try this bit:

#2
...a dead man lying face up inches beneath the surface: his open eyes misted as though with cobwebs, his hair and robes swirling around him like smoke.
'There are bodies in here!'

Anybody? Anybody?

The Fellowship Of The Ring. Do I get a prize for guessing without checking?

You would, but for the fact that you are...

WRONG.

Anyone else?

(it's not a LOTR book AT ALL)

Hmm... I'm thinking "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", but it's been a while since I read it...

DING!! we have a winner.

JK says she's never read LOTR, but she sure as hell has seen the movie.

The giveaway is that the wizard uses a wand.

Everyone knows the wizards in LotR are too cool for pussy little wands. They have big manly staffs.

Phew! I was worried that my answer was a bit too obvious and embarrassing to be correct.

Yeah, I was thinking the same, re: wands vs. staves.

However, a quick flick through The Hobbit reveals that "Gandalf lit up his wand" (p.61).

Besides, most fantasy is, one way or another, derivative of Tolkien's Middle Earth works. It's just that some are a bit more imaginative about it.

I should just clarify that when I say "most fantasy", I, of course, mean "most fantasy that I've read through the years", which unfortunately includes a lot of crappy fantasy. Especially David Eddings. :(

Yes, I was going to comment that there's lots of REALLY EXCELLENT fantasy that owes very little to JRR. particularly in YA.

...(shudder) David Eddings (shudder)...

I've quickly forgotten most of LOTR, but I don't recall there being any zombies in it.

Hooray for the Harry Potter books, for they contain ZOMBIES. How awesome is that?

Yeah well... in my younger days, David Eddings and Raymond E. Feist seemed like a natural progression from Tolkien. *shakes head*

However, my life changed when I read Philip Pullman's "The Northern Lights", six years ago. (I'm a little worried about the upcoming film, though...)

Oh, bravo, Andrew. Gee it pays to check, doesn't it.
I don't read enough fantasy, unfortunately, to be mindful of details like wands v. staffs. I did, however, overhear Cate/Elizabeth paraphrase Gandalf in the Elizabeth sequel trailer t'other night. She said, You Will Not Pass!! to the Spanish Armada, and I said to myself in my seat, 'Thief, Baggins...or Kapur' (or whoever the director is).

*fans herself* Oh, Philip Pullman, how I love 'Dark Materials'. The movie HAD me worried, but I saw a trailor which looked ok. I got quite excited.

Once upon a time (like in high school), I LOVED David Eddings. Then he let Leigh help too much. I hate Leigh. She ruined a adolescent obsession. Althogh ANYTHING that Eddings released after the original Elenium trilogy was fairly ruinous in its own right...Ugh.
